Riyadh: Saudi Arabia has reportedly executed two Bahrainis accused of committing terrorist acts. The Saudi Interior Ministry itself informed the information on Monday. This is the ninth such killing this month.
Jafar Sultan and Sadiq Thamar were killed. But so far there has been no announcement from the Bahraini authorities.
The Ministry of Interior said that both had attended camps of terrorist organizations aimed at destabilizing the security of Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. The ministry also said that both of them had helped terrorists in Saudi Arabia by smuggling explosives.
But it is not clear which terrorist organizations both of them are working for.
Nine criminals have been executed in Saudi Arabia since May 2. Citing state media, Al Jazeera reported that more than 40 executions took place in Saudi Arabia this year. In 2022, 147 people were killed. 81 of them are accused of terrorism.
According to Amnesty International, Sultan and Tamar were arrested in Saudi Arabia on May 8, 2015. He was sentenced in October 2021.
But in June 2022, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on unjust and arbitrary executions sent a letter to the Saudi authorities. It called for a stay of all execution proceedings against the two men and for them to be retried according to the standards of international law.
More than 1,000 executions have been carried out since King Salman came to power in 2015, according to a report released by Reprieve and the European Saudi Organization for Human Rights.
