“Saudi Arabia evacuates its citizens and foreign officials amid fighting in Sudan”

Sudan in the midst of massive fighting after the coup attempt. Saudi Arabia moved quickly by evacuating its citizens.

Reported AFP, Sunday (23/4/2023), the evacuation was carried out by the royal Saudi navy with the support of other military elements. Not only Saudi citizens, a number of foreign diplomats and officials were also arrested.

From preliminary data, there were 91 Saudi citizens and around 66 foreigners who were evacuated. The 66 foreign nationals are Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Tunisia, Pakistan, India, Bulgaria, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Canada and Burkina Faso.

The foreign officials included “diplomats and international officials,” the Saudi foreign ministry said, without providing identification details.

The Saudi foreign ministry said it was “working to provide all the necessary needs for foreign nationals” before their departure to their respective countries.

Saudi state-owned Al-Ekhbariya television released several videos of warships filled with Saudi nationals approaching the port of Jeddah on Saturday (22/4). The Saudi national was then received by officials and a number of soldiers by distributing sweets.

Women and children holding Saudi flags were also seen getting off one of the boats.
