Official Saudi media reported, on Tuesday, that the Kingdom’s government will establish a new agency “organically linked to the king and transfer to him specializations, tasks, and work to supervise the affairs of imams and muezzins in the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque, and everything related to their religious affairs.”
The government said in a statement published by the Saudi Press Agency on the social networking platform X (formerly Twitter) that this includes “the scientific seminars and lessons within them related to the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque.”
It is likely that the council will enjoy greater financial and administrative independence, and replace a previous council that was under the supervision of the government rather than the king.
And the royal order issued by the Saudi monarch came to appoint Sheikh Abdul Rahman bin Abdulaziz Al-Sudais as head of religious affairs at the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque, with the rank of minister.
Another royal decree was issued appointing Tawfiq bin Fawzan Al-Rabiah as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the General Authority for the Care of the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque.
