Reported by Arab News, Monday (11/3/2024), the sighting made by astronomers from the Astronomical Observatory Department of Majmaah University in Riyadh marked the start of the holy month for Muslims.
This important event was led by a leading Saudi astronomer, Director of the Astronomical Observatory, Abdullah Al-Khudairi, in Sudair. The Saudi Supreme Court announced that Monday, March 11, will be the first day of Ramadan.
Apart from Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE have also confirmed that Ramadan will start on Monday 11 March. Meanwhile, Oman, Pakistan, Australia, Malaysia, Brunei and Iran on March 12.
Determining the start date relies on lunar calculations and the physical appearance of the new moon, a practice rooted in Islamic tradition.
“Calculations and technology complete the sighting process. I say that astronomical calculations and observations with the naked eye, like the human eye, both need each other,” said Al-Khudairi.
Looking ahead, Majmaah University revealed plans to improve its facilities and expand its team to further simplify the moon sighting process.
“We have strategic plans to expand our facilities, equipment and workforce here (Hawtat Sudair),” said Deputy Director of Postgraduate and Scientific Research at Majmaah University.
“We want to build a big building here. This will be a Majmaah center for moon viewing,” he added.
