Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, on Sunday (8/10) called for an end to the escalation of violence following the sudden attack on Israel carried out by Palestinian militants Hamas, on Saturday (7/10).

Israel then retaliated by pounding the Palestinian enclave in Gaza on Sunday (8/10), killing hundreds of people in retaliation for one of the bloodiest Hamas attacks in history, which killed several hundred Israelis.

Israeli airstrikes hit residential blocks, tunnels, mosques and Hamas office buildings in Gaza, killing more than 400 people, including 20 children. The move is in line with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s promise to exact “great revenge” on Hamas.

As reported Arab News, Monday (9/10), Prince Faisal’s comments came when he received a telephone call from United States (US) Minister of Foreign Affairs Antony Blinken. They discussed the danger of continued military escalation, and the need to find ways to defuse tensions.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry said in a statement that they discussed the need for the international community to unite to mitigate the impact of the crisis by contributing to maintaining international peace and security.

Earlier on Sunday (8/10), Prince Faisal also received a call from French Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs Catherine Colonna. The two discussed the latest developments in Gaza and the need to stop the escalation.

Prince Faisal emphasized that Saudi Arabia rejects civilians being targeted in violence. He expressed the need for Israel and Palestine to respect international humanitarian law.

He also received a telephone call from Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs Hanke Bruins Slot to discuss the Israeli-Palestinian conflict situation.

Saudi Arabia and Israel were recently said to be in the midst of a plan to normalize relations, initiated by the US. However, it is predicted that the military escalation between Israel and Hamas militants could thwart plans to normalize relations.
