“Saudade”: A Cuban Choreographic Piece Inspired by Portuguese Nostalgia

Havana, Jun 10 (Prensa Latina) The capital’s Teatro Martí will host today the show Saudade, a choreographic piece inspired by the homonymous documentary, recently premiered at the Cuban Art Factory (FAC).

Performed by the artistic project Persona Colectivo, under the choreographic direction of its director Sandra Ramy, the work will also be presented tomorrow Sunday and will have its general direction, which will be joined by Sandra Lopes, Inti Herrera and the musician X Alfonso, from the team of F.A.C.

The piece will be defended by the actress Tamara Venereo and the dancers Daniela Ponjuán, Thaimí Cisnero, Luis Antonio Salazar and Cristián Hernández and has original music by Pepe Gavilondo, reported the Internet portal of the National Council of Performing Arts in Cuba.

This proposal will promote a unique approach to the Portuguese word Saudade, associated with “nostalgia for someone absent or something unfulfilled, the suspended expectation”, indicated about a month ago the presentation of the documentary initiative that now becomes staging.

The group of creators moved in this direction, who tried to show the multiple forms of relationship that human beings can have with the sea, the distances, the departures…, and the feelings that their consequences involve.

Saudade is a production of the Cuban Art Factory with the collaboration of Persona Colectivo, which celebrates its 10th anniversary, the Camões Institute and the Embassy of Portugal in Cuba.

Created by Sandra Ramy in 2013, Persona Colectivo belongs to the catalog of the Havana Theater Center and since its creation it has shown a very particular repertoire that stands out within the Cuban dance scene, according to Cubaescena.

The work of the outstanding choreographer and dancer has been recognized with the Villanueva Award from the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba for her works Detrás de nadie (2005), Yilliam de Bala coming soon (2015), and Sacre (2022).
