Satoyama: Italian Musicians Blending Northern European Jazz and Eclectic Experiments

This Friday, October 20, the “Satoyama” group of four musically curious Italians will perform in the autumn concert series “Art of Riga Jazz” in Latvian Radio Studio 1.

Satoyama’s music is woven with Northern European jazz influences, mixed together with experiments in both the acoustic and electronic fields. The British jazz portal JazzViews says of the music by trumpeter Luca Benedetto, guitarist Christian Russano, double bassist Marco Bellafiore and drummer Gabriele Luttino: “This river of surreal sound is thought-provoking and despite its weighty harshness still has an elemental syrupy, reek of optimism, which balances the melancholy and sentiment of the trumpet.”

Although the group is from Italy, its name is borrowed from Japanese, where “satoyama” means the boundary between agricultural land and the foothills. “Satoyama” members confidently stand for green values in the world, but do not deny the presence of modern technology either. In their music, in parallel with acoustic instruments, they use electronic sound equipment, creating a balanced overall sound,” informs the organizers. The group has also participated in the projects of ecological monitoring organizations, maintaining an open attitude towards new artistic possibilities and expressions.
