The 104th edition of the 500 Miles from Indianapolis ended up under a yellow flag, after a beastly accident of Spencer Pigot against the pit entrance wall. Fortunately, the Rahal Letterman driver got out of the car with the help of the stewards, but he was conscious at all times and with mobility throughout his body.
Takuma Sato took his second victory in the Indy 500, after the 2017 win, the first for Bobby Rahal’s team. The Japanese, ex of the Formula 1, was in the lead position from the first moment, hovering around the top 5 from the beginning and taking advantage of the slipstream of Scott Dixon on lap 160, of the 200 total.
The three-way duel, with Graham rahal as third contender, and dubbed Kimball and Kanaan as guests of honor, he was diluted five laps from the end by Pigot’s accident.
But Sato seemed to have it all under control, with slightly more pace than his rivals, as he was 1.1 seconds ahead at the time.
The second half of the race had it all, after four cautions in the first half, in which Dixon seemed to have everything under control and the Mexican Patricio O’Ward seemed to have podium options in fourth position.
In the end, O’Ward’s pace waned but he crossed the line in sixth, the best result for a Mexican driver in this competition.
Alex Palou he starred in the fifth yellow flag on lap 122, after running 9th and having set the second fastest lap of the race up to that point (third at the end). The Spaniard lost control of his Dale Coyne Racing with Team Goh and hit the outer wall hard, ending his first Indy 500 dream.
Alexander Rossi led to the sixth caution, after being sanctioned for touching Sato when exiting the pits when both battled with Dixon. The American, winner in 2016 of the event, was unleashed and destroyed his car, neutralizing another 10 laps more the race, until 155.
O’Ward dropped to seventh after another round of pits and Sato completed the overtaking that marked the 104th edition of the quintessential American race on lap 160. The 500 miles speak Japanese again.
