American satirical news site The Onion has bought the fake news site InfoWars from conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. The takeover reported by The Onion was confirmed by Reuters news agency based on court documents.
Alex Jones has been in financial trouble for some time now, after being forced by a judge to pay more than $1 billion in damages.
Jones has been a famous conspiracy theorist for decades. He was fired from a radio station in Texas in 1999, in part because he said the US government was behind the 1995 Oklahoma bombing. That massacre left 168 dead.
He then moved on to the infamous InfoWars. He then announced that the government was also behind the 9/11 attacks. In 2012, it came under heavy fire after the deadly attack on Sandy Hook elementary school, which killed 26 people, including many children. Jones said several times that the attack was staged and that the parents of the dead children were actors.

He had to pay $1.5 billion to the relatives of the Sandy Hook victims. To raise that money, InfoWars was auctioned off. It is not known what The Onion paid for the site.
Most major social media platforms and podcast distributors banned Jones and InfoWars about five years ago for violating their terms of service. X, which was still Twitter at the time, was also there, but owner Elon Musk allowed Jones to return last year.
There is currently nothing to view on the InfoWars website. The Onion says he has plans for him and specifically wants to make fun of him. An anti-gun violence group has already been promised that they can advertise on InfoWars for a longer period of time.
Alex Jones himself expressed anger at losing his site. In a live stream he said that the Democrats in the US are trying to silence him and that they are working with The Onion to do that, although he did not state what he is establishing. At the same time he tried to get people interested in his other channels and raise money.
