Satire: Leaning Tower in Germany

When we talk about leaning towers, the name that immediately comes to mind is the curved architecture of Pisa. Its curvature is truly world-famous and if you stand in front of it for too long you might even get a little sick. Especially those natures whose sense of order only allows straight lines or right angles. The Leaning Tower of Pisa is almost as famous as the Eiffel Tower in Paris, although the latter has a boring symmetry.

Due to the incredible fame of the building in Pisa, people forget that other cities also had builders who knew as much about statics as a cow about pole vaulting. Bologna in northern Italy should be mentioned. The city recently made headlines because the leaning tower there – called Garisenda – sways strangely. And there are quite a few Bolognese people who fear that the tower, which is largely unknown internationally, could soon fall at their feet.

The leaning tower of the Hessian town of Korbach is even less known than the leaning tower of Bologna. This belongs to the Catholic Nikolai Church. It has a nice curvature at the tip, which has not yet caused any great excitement among the world public. Experts on leaning towers assume that Korbach would only become more important in the long term if the towers of Pisa and Bologna collapsed. (nyf)
