The problem of environmental pollution in Cartagena seems to have no end. Every day the corners and main avenues are full of rubbish, which causes the environment of the city to be affected.
This, according to some people from Cartagena, occurs because there are ordinary people and wagon drivers who leave waste and useless things dumped anywhere, thus creating satellite garbage cans that emanate bad odors.
The team of photojournalists of The universal captured some critical points in the busiest areas such as: Pedro de Heredia avenue, Transversal 54, Ceballos, San Isidro, El Campestre, among others.
“There is always that amount of garbage here, those from the cleaning company come, clean it and fill it with garbage again. Usually it is by people who work to dispose of rubble and other useless elements, but what they do is leave it lying somewhere to earn money ”, commented a citizen. Don’t they clean them?
At the end of the tour, we spoke with the cleaning companies of the city, Veolia and Pacaribe. Spokesmen for both institutions assured that their workers visit these critical points to clean them every day and ask the community to become aware and create a sense of belonging, and thus keep these spaces clean.
De Veolia assured that a month ago they recovered the critical point on Transversal 54, at the height of the Los Almendros neighborhood, known as La Concretera.

“This site had become one of the largest sources of contamination in Cartagena due to the high volumes of waste dumped there. Monthly, approximately 150 tons of garbage were collected at this point, “they explained from Veolia, adding that:” We recovered the place, adapted it and protected it with colorful tires to prevent more unscrupulous people from coming to dirty it. ” Read here: ‘La Concretera’ is a thing of the past on Transversal 54
This environmental activity had the support of the councilors of Locality 3, the community and the Environmental Police.
Both cleaning companies indicate that they invite the people of Cartagena to practice good environmental practices and not throw waste on the roads or public areas of the city.
De Veolia indicated that: “In general, this type of contamination occurs in public spaces and is waste that is not part of the waste at home, so they must make a special collection with dump trucks.”
