Sassuolo director Giovanni Carnevali insists there have never been advanced discussions with Juventus for Domenico Berardi, but would not rule out a January departure.
Berardi spent much of the summer lobbying for a move to the Turin giants, after negotiations were broken down by his club when the mid-August deadline passed.
However, Carnevali says the affair was never as intense as the newspapers reported.
“I admit that there were contacts with Juventus after Berardi expressed his firm intention to join the Bianconeri,” Carnevali told TRC Modena.
“They wanted the player in Turin, but there was never any real negotiation. We had only set a deadline of August 17 to close the deal on time and find a replacement.
“At that time, maybe Juve had different problems to solve and it ended without progress.”
Despite the tension between the clubs and Juventus seemingly annoyed by Sassuolo’s refusal to discuss it further, Carnevali is leaving the door open for them to resume that conversation in January.
“We will never exclude anything, even more important proposals could come. I can’t say what will happen, but it’s obvious that Sassuolo don’t need to sell.
“Juventus is a great team that hasn’t changed much, they have quality players and I consider them, along with Inter, the favorites for the Scudetto.
If Berardi is to leave Sassuolo in January, it will likely be a loan deal with an obligation to buy for around €25-30 million, including bonuses.
Carnevali reveals another reason for the tension between Juventus and Sassuolo, which is hidden behind the scenes.
“I am disappointed that Francesco Magnanelli, who was our historic captain for many years and spent last season in Alessio Dionisi’s team, has decided to join Juventus for Max Allegri’s team.”
