Former first couple Barack and Michelle Obama had reason to be proud when they watched their youngest daughter Sasha graduate from the University of Southern California. Joined by their older daughter Malia and a team of security guards, the Obamas beamed with pride as Sasha received her diploma at the ceremony. Sasha, 21, who started college at the University of Michigan before transferring to USC to major in sociology, was all smiles in a black cap and gown featuring the USC Shield and cardinal piping, which she wore over a patterned cream maxi dress.
The Obama family was dressed in style for the occasion. Michelle, 59, looked incredibly chic in a sleeveless black trench dress that was tied at the waist and featured a navy ruffled tulle skirt. Meanwhile, her husband Barack, 61, sported a light gray suit that he paired with a crisp white button-down sans tie and black brogues. The former president wore black shades and carried a cup of coffee as he sweetly held hands with his wife at the graduation. Sasha’s older sister Malia, 24, was dressed up in a pale pink off-the-shoulder dress and lime green strappy sandals.
Sasha stood out from her fellow graduates in her strappy lime green stilettos, which towered over one of her friends. She held her cellphone in her hand along with what appeared to be an index card. Sasha blended in with the other graduates as she hugged her pals, but she also stood out with her signature long nails, which were painted a shade of midnight blue. Her hair was styled in loose waves, and she had Hawaiian leis around her neck.
The Obamas were joined by their security team at the crowded event. Michelle recently opened up about how her role as a parent has changed now that she is in her 50s and her daughters are building a life for themselves in California. ‘I’m moving from mom-in-chief to advisor-in-chief,’ she told Today co-anchor Hoda Kotb on the first episode of her podcast, The Light, which was recorded during her latest book tour. ‘That’s a lovely thing – to be able to watch my girls fly and have the relief that “Okay, I think I didn’t mess them up.”‘
Barack and Michelle happily mingled with acquaintances before taking their seats, and Malia was seen raising her hand to wave to Sasha from her seat. The Obamas’ security guards kept a watchful eye on them as they walked on the USC track with the rest of the graduates’ families and friends. Sasha was spotted posing for pictures with her pals after receiving her diploma, and the family and their security detail crowded around her as they walked off the field.
Both Sasha and Malia have been making their way in the entertainment industry. Malia moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a screenwriter after graduating from Harvard University in 2021. She scored a position working on Donald Glover’s upcoming Amazon show, Swarm, which is about a ‘Beyoncé-type character.’ Sasha served as a production assistant on Halle Berry’s CBS sci-fi drama series, Extant, before making it into the writer’s room. Glover confirmed in March 2022 that he gave Malia her first job writing for the series.

Sasha looked stunning in her black cap and gown, while Michelle and Barack looked incredibly chic.
