Sasa Filipovski extends his contract with s.Oliver Wrzburg by three years

Basketball Bundesliga club s.Oliver Würzburg has extended the contract with its coach Sasa Filipovski by three years. The club confirmed information from this editorial team on Friday before the jump ball of the game against Mitteldeutsche BC on Saturday (the game had not yet started when this message was published). The 47-year-old Slovenian took over the club shortly before Christmas 2021 and has won nine games in 19 games so far, including seven in a row in March and April. Since the success in Gieen last Saturday, the mission to stay up in the league has also been fulfilled. The club has now managed to retain Filipovski, who, according to this editorial team, has also turned down higher-value offers, for a longer period of time.

“I am very glad and happy that Sasa has chosen us and recognizes how hard we work and what we want to build here in Würzburg,” emphasizes Kresimir Loncar, Manager Sport and Scouting at s.Oliver Würzburg in a statement from the club. The former player also praises Filipovski’s character, who was the ideal head coach in a very difficult situation. On December 13, 2021, the main and name sponsor s.Oliver announced its withdrawal at the end of the season. On the same day, the club parted ways with coach Denis Wucherer a few hours later after the team had lost for the fifth time in a row the previous evening and slipped into a relegation zone.

Filipovski restored the team’s confidence

After the series of defeats initially also lasted under Filipovski and the team was put on a two-week compulsory Corona break in January, the Frankenderby against Bamberg was the first win in early February after twelve defeats in a row. Filipovski had managed to restore the team’s confidence despite some unfortunate defeats. “Sasa has shown within a short time what hard work can bring out of individual players and a team, despite numerous challenges,” says managing director Steffen Liebler. Filipovski’s ideas were convincing even before he was hired and the cooperation was excellent at all levels. Liebler is also happy that the Slovenian is staying for three years and wants to take the next steps with the club.

“For me, this step is the opportunity to build something up in Würzburg. The city has great potential as a basketball location,” says the Würzburg coach in a statement from the club. According to Filipovski, “it is very important to have a work ethic, passion and good cooperation in the organization and in the city”. It is important to him that “the people in Wrzburg recognize that we are part of this city”. This also means that everyone in the club is “constantly working on getting better”.

To person

Now Filipovski was born on September 6, 1974. At the age of 22 he started his career as a coach in 1996, first as an assistant at Union Olimpija Ljubljana. In 2003 he took over the post of head coach at his Slovenian home club. This was followed by positions at Turow (Poland), as an assistant coach at CSKA Moscow (Russia), Lottomatica Rome (Italy), again in Ljubljana, Zielona Gora (Poland), Banvit Bandirma (Turkey), AS Monaco (France) and Partizan Belgrade (Serbia). He won a total of 14 national titles, reached the final of the Basketball Champions League and was voted coach of the year in Poland three times.
