Sarlat Film Festival. “Drama Queens” or how to love when you are different

How to love when you are different? How to be famous and not forget where you come from? “Les Reines du drama”, in official selection at the Sarlat Film Festival (Dordogne), addresses these two questions through the story of two young people, just out of adolescence, who are united by their love of music and what they feel for each other. Only, one is overtly trashy while the second is more pop culture oriented.

“I wanted to tell a tragic love story,” confides Alexis Langlois, the director. They can’t love each other because of a world that’s too standardized, they don’t make the same music, they don’t come from the same background. It’s difficult to love others well, the path is painful. » The story is told by a YouTuber, Bilal Hassani, who almost plays himself. “The film is marked by Bilal,” explains the director. I saw one of his videos where he talks about coming out at a Catholic college. It’s a terrible story, but he sought to give strength to his community. For me, YouTubers are a bit like today’s storytellers. » A tale is a bit of the direction he wanted to give to his film.

References to the 2000s

Beyond the difficulty of living a love story in broad daylight and in a serene way, the film makes a series of nods to the beginning and mid-2000s. The allusion to the telecrochet “New Star” is barely veiled, just like the references to iconic stars of this era, like Britney Spears, who experienced fame and oblivion.

“One of the girls is in the sky,” explains the director, “but it’s not her. She will pay dearly for this climb. » The question of fans is also asked, between passion and the desire to burn what we loved. “When you are a star, you are doomed,” confirms Alexis Langlois. It’s difficult to live with your image. »
