Sarkozy sentenced to three years in prison for corruption – Corriere.it

The former French president, Nicolas sarkozy, was sentenced today at 3 years – 2 with the conditional – for the wiretapping scandal. Among the charges, the corruption of a magistrate. The former head of state had ended up in prison because he was suspected of having obtained information from a magistrate of the Court of Cassation, Gilbert Azibert, in exchange for a post at the Audit Court in Munich. The prosecution had asked for a 4-year sentence. After the sentence Sarkozy left the courthouse without making statements.

The information solicited by the former head of the Elysée and which had cost him the indictment concerned a possible funding for his 2007 election campaign – the very one that would have brought him to the top of the state until 2012 – coming from Libya. For those facts he had also been placed in custody for a few hours by the judicial police. Sarkozy has always rejected all accusations that were moved to him: now he will have the right to serve one year of residual sentence under house arrest and with an electronic bracelet as an alternative to prison. This, at least, is the solution proposed by the president of the court, Christine Me. Or to carry out socially useful work. However, the former president’s lawyers have announced that they will appeal the sentence.

Nicolas Sarkozy, 66 years old, the second French president to undergo a criminal sentence: in 2011 it was the turn of his predecessor Jacques Chirac, who were inflicted two years for some favorable hiring at the Paris municipality. However, Chirac had not had to serve his sentence.
