Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Central General Hospital (RSUP) Dr Sardjito in Sleman, DI Yogyakarta, became the public spotlight regarding their request for support oxygen for handling Covid-19 patients on Saturday (3/7).
The request was conveyed by the President Director of Dr Sardjito Hospital, Rukmono Siswishanto through a letter he addressed to the Minister of Health and a number of related officials in DIY. After the request, Dr Sardjito Hospital also noted that 63 patients died from Saturday (3/7) to Sunday (4/7) morning.
The public then suspected that the deaths of dozens of people were due to lack of oxygen. However, the Head of Legal and Public Relations of Dr Sardjito Hospital, Banu Hermawan, denied that not all of those who died were due to lack of oxygen. He said the number of patients who died after the central oxygen ran out at 20.00 WIB was 33 patients.
However, he continued, the 33 patients who died were already in a condition that was supplied with oxygen from the tube. They could not be helped because their condition was already severe or clinical problems. A total of 15 patients died in the ED.
“They are still supplied with oxygen even with tubes, they died because only about four patients were on a ventilator,” said Banu.
The news of 63 patients died was previously conveyed by a member of Commission D DPRD DIY Muhammad Yazid who claimed to have obtained the information from a trusted source at Dr Sardjito Hospital.
He guaranteed its validity, even though the hospital did not want to admit it.
“63 yes, not all (causes of death) lack oxygen. Clinically yes, they died, even though Covid was yes,” he said.
Responding to the urgency, Deputy Chairman of Commission IX of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Melki Laka Lena, asked the Ministry of Health to be responsible for the delay in oxygen supply which allegedly caused the death of dozens of patients at Dr Sardjito Hospital.
The reason, according to Melki, RSUP dr Sardjito has sent a letter to the Ministry of Health about the condition of oxygen supply on July 3. Melki assessed that the Ministry of Health should immediately respond to information about oxygen supply.
Most recently, the Governor of Yogyakarta, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X, said that his region received an allocation of medical oxygen rations for the treatment of Covid-19 and non-Covid patients of 47.6 tons a day.
This was conveyed by the Sultan after attending a coordination meeting with the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Menko Marves) Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, discussing the problem of oxygen scarcity in DIY, Sunday evening.
Sultan said the results of the meeting decided that the central government had agreed to allocate oxygen rations for referral hospitals for handling Covid-19 and regular ones in DIY with more capacity than usual.
Sultan explained that the average oxygen requirement at the Covid referral hospital and not in his area was only around 20 tons per day. However, the recent spike in Covid-19 cases has made its use more than double a day.
