Activities have been suspended since 1is October 2023, by the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries.
This suspension is justified by Gabon’s desire to“ensure the sustainable use and diversity of fisheries resources”. It is therefore with the objective of preserving the species that Decision No. 0025/MAEPA/SG/DGPA of September 2020 was taken which establishes a period for fishing for ethmalose (sardines). in the Gabonese Republic.
In fact, the suspension measure is limited to Corisco Bay located between Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, and to the Komo estuary. After noting that fishermen continued to carry out this sardine fishing activity despite its ban, the minister recalled on November 3, 2023, that “Any contravention of these requirements would be subject to sanctions, in accordance with the regulations in force”warns the Ministry in charge of Fisheries.
He also indicated that the practice could resume on November 30, while stocks were replenished. « while ensuring the rational management of fisheries resources in these areas ».
