Sarah McBride: A Rising Star in Delaware Politics

In such a small state, democratic rivals are bound to cross paths. That happened as McBride gave a speech to the Delaware Stonewall PAC at a seafood restaurant in Rehoboth Beach on Saturday. The group had recently supported her, ensuring a McBride-friendly audience.

“We are a neighboring country. We meet everywhere,” noted New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer, who did not take sides in the congressional primary.

Already something of a local celebrity, McBride is no stranger to national politics. She made national headlines in 2011 when she came out as transgender while serving as class president at American University. And she has long been associated with the Biden family. President Joe Biden wrote the foreword to her 2018 memoir, and McBride said his late son, former Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden, was one of her mentors.

Local star power certainly doesn’t hurt in the election campaign. Delaware state Sen. Russ Huxtable, who supports her, noted that voters are more likely to recognize her when they campaign together: “People say, ‘Oh my God, is that Sarah McBride?'”

In addition to name recognition, her leadership record and two state election victories reduce “a lot of doubt” voters might have about her identity, said Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.), who was the first openly gay person of color to serve in Congress is chosen. “She’s already shown she can win.”
