Sara Baras brings her flamenco performance “Alma” back to New York City

The Spanish flamenco dancer and choreographer, Sara Baras, returns to the New York public with her show Alma, a fusion of bolero and flamenco.

“It’s very, very, very exciting because you get nervous, you know, you really want them to feel, in this case Alma, that it goes very straight to the heart and it’s very important that the New York public always gives the feeling that they are willing to to let yourself go, right?” says the artist.

Alma’s staging is a tribute to the artist’s father, Cayetano Pereira, who loved boleros and sadly passed away recently.

Baras assures that producing this show has been a great lesson not only for her but for the entire team.

“With “Alma” we have learned to feel the people who are not among us but inside of us. And in this case, it is my father who has always been a very important person to me. It continues to be so,” says Baras.

She was born in Cádiz, Spain and learned to dance flamenco as a child with her mother, the renowned dancer Concha Baras.

25 years ago, he founded the company El Ballet Flamenco Sara Baras.

He has traveled all over the world showing in each representation, the color and the flamenco dance considered a World Heritage Site.

“And it seems to me an art with a beastly richness, with a beastly identity and a lot of heart”, says Baras.

“Look what a beautiful thing,” he comments, showing a piece of his wardrobe.

He says that each detail is very important in each function; like the costumes and the shawl in each choreography.

“It is also that the music at that moment is linked to the way of expressing the dance, so that later the energy that comes out is simple and clear.”

She likes to teach the new generations what she has learned over the years in a world that used to be dominated by men, but thanks to artists like her and her company, barriers have been broken.

“But today we carry it in a very, very natural way, and I love my girls, I adore them, there are five of them and I adore all five of them.”

The flamenco ballet Sara Baras presents “Alma”, as part of the Flamenco Festival of New York at the New York City Center theater, from Thursday, March 23 to Sunday, March 26.
