SAR Team Finds Motorcycle Owner Abandoned on Suramadu Bridge

The joint SAR (Search and Rescue) team found the owner of a motorcycle with license plate number L 5265 FE who was left with the engine still running on the Suramadu Bridge.

The man named Widodo, aged 53, was found dead in the sea waters around the Suramadu Bridge on Tuesday (7/9/2021) at 09.15 WIB.

Hari Adi Purnomo, Head of the Surabaya SAR Office, said that the victim’s body was found floating in the waters near the Suramadu bridge, precisely at coordinates 7° 11,068′ S 112° 46,505′ E.

“The process of evacuating the bodies of victims from the sea went smoothly, the weather conditions in Suramadu waters were quite friendly. Furthermore, the victim’s body was taken to the hospital via the Navigation District Pier,” he said in a written statement from the Surabaya Search and Rescue Office.

The search for victims began with information received by the Surabaya SAR Office that there was an ownerless motorbike that was left on the Suramadu Bridge, on Monday (6/8/2021) at around 20.00 WIB.

According to the complainant’s statement, a number of items belonging to the victim were found on the motorbike, including shoes, helmets, keys, identity cards, and a will made by the previous victim.

“It is suspected that the victim jumped from the bridge into the sea,” said Hari.

Immediately after receiving the information, the Surabaya SAR Office standby officers coordinated with relevant parties in the Tanjung Perak area for follow-up in the search for victims.

“We deployed an operation team consisting of 5 crew members to search for victims using 1 RIB unit and supported by a number of rescue equipment,” said Hari.

The search and evacuation efforts involved the cooperation of a number of SAR elements, including the Surabaya SAR Office, the Bakamla Satrol for the Surabaya area, Ditpolair Polda East Java, VTS Surabaya, Navigation District, Tanjung Perak Main Harbormaster, Kenjeran Police, Kenjeran Military Command, Surabaya Linmas, and potential other SARs.
