After 44 years since its foundation in the British capital and its service to the Arabic book, the “Dar Al-Saqi” bookstore announces that it will definitively close its doors in London on December 31st.
Yesterday the publishing house released a statement confirming the news, which stated: “Despite the closure of Al-Saqi Bookshop in London, its legacy continues with the two independent publishing houses: Dar Al-Saqi for Arabic publishing in Beirut and Saqi Books for English publishing in London, who continue to work and publish books as usual.».
With much regret, Lynn Gaspard says of the bookstore that her parents founded with Mai Ghossoub, and which has hosted the Arab diaspora: “To me, the bartender is much more than just a bookstore. Growing up, my sister and I spent hours playing between books. We will miss working on it, but we look forward to the next chapter in the House’s story from our new West London office. We are thrilled at the opportunity to bring the best of new books and classics from the Arab world to the UK and beyond over the next few years.”
The publishing house indicated that the reasons for the closure are multiple, including the stones and long closures, the high price of paper and freight, which has exacerbated the library crisis, and everything related to books.
