The sapphire was found when a craftsman was digging a well behind a house in the Ratnapura area, Sri Lanka.
The sapphire is blue in color, and weighs 510 kg or 2.5 carats.
The stone is also called Lucky Sapphire.

Gamage himself did not want to reveal the full name and location of his house for security reasons.
Gamage, who is also a gem seller, informed the local authorities about his findings.
However, it takes a year to clean the rock from mud and dirt, before it can be analyzed and certified.
