São Paulo signs a contract to host an E-Prix from 2023

The city of São Paulo, together with SPTuris and GL Events, signed a contract with the Formula E World Championship during the Monaco E-Prix, to host an E-Prix in 2023 in Brazil for the first time, subject to FIA approval.

The five-year deal, with the possibility of renewal, means the city of São Paulo could host Formula E from Season 9, the start of the new Gen3 era of Formula E.

“We are delighted that the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship is heading to Brazil for the very first time, subject to approval by the FIA ​​World Motor Sport Council in June,” said Alberto Longo, co-founder and responsible for the Formula E championship.

“The country has enormous potential for long-term development. The country has a long-standing passion for motorsport, it is an important market as one of the biggest countries in the world, and São Paulo itself even is a historic racing venue.

“We look forward to welcoming the Brazilian fans, they are unlike any other and for sure there will be a lively and unique atmosphere as fans enjoy Formula E with the leap forward in technology and technology. performance that we’re going to see with the Gen3.”

Ricardo Nunes, Mayor of São Paulo, welcomed the agreement: “Hosting an E-Prix is ​​fully in line with the city’s objectives: to attract events that promote São Paulo’s image worldwide, to move the economy and create jobs through event tourism; furthermore, promote sustainable development.”

Gustavo Pires, CEO of São Paulo Turismo, was in Monaco to sign the Formula E deal. He said: “Creating a calendar of strategic events is essential to the strong reopening we want for the city of São Paulo in the post-pandemic and the E-Prix can contribute a lot in this movement.”

The news was welcomed by Brazilian ABB FIA Formula E World Championship driver and 2016/17 champion Lucas di Grassi.

“The news of São Paulo hosting the next generation of Formula E rings like a beautiful melody in my ears,” said di Grassi of ROKiT Venturi Racing. “Not only does this step signify the return of the heyday of electric motorsport to South America, it is an important step towards the electrification of the Brazilian automotive market.”
