São João do billion: Stores must break sales record

São João Festivities in Bahia Expected to Generate Record Revenue

Bahia, Brazil – As São João approaches, traders in Bahia are gearing up for increased profits during the festive season. São João, a traditional celebration in Brazil, is known for its lively parties, music, and cultural events. Event promoter Valdenita Bispo, founder of Geo Produções e Turismo, is expecting a boost in business during this period.

Geo Produções e Turismo provides equipment and personnel for various events and also organizes excursions to islands and other cities in Bahia. Valdenita Bispo explains, “The expectation is always to earn more at São João because through an event, we promote another. During this period, we take part of the value to pay for the schooner trips, which traditionally start in September.”

According to data from Fecomércio-BA, trade projects the highest revenue in 12 years in Bahia for the São João period, with sales expected to reach R$2 billion. This represents a significant increase compared to previous years. The heated trade during the festivities stimulates various economic sectors, including events, food, clothing, and aesthetic procedures. Some segments are expecting up to a 40% increase in sales.

The clothing segment, in particular, is projected to have revenues of R$758 million in Bahia this month, a 2.4% increase compared to the same period last year. Fecomércio-BA attributes this positive projection to the gradual resumption of economic sectors in the post-pandemic era. Consumers are in a more favorable economic condition, the job market is more heated, and inflation is less pressing, contributing to the growth of purchasing power.

The food sector is also expected to see significant gains, with supermarkets projected to earn R$1.2 billion during São João. Liquor producers, in particular, anticipate a 40% increase in sales compared to the previous year.

The services sector, including music and entertainment, also experiences a surge in demand during São João. Val Rios, a music producer and member of the trio Forró do Dendê, notes that the demand for live music performances increases significantly during this period. The shows are more frequent in the week of the party, with Val Rios and his band receiving numerous requests. Despite the economic challenges caused by the pandemic, Val Rios ensures that the price of shows is negotiable to accommodate everyone’s economic condition.

Even unconventional sectors, such as aesthetic clinics, witness an increase in demand during São João. At the Harmô aesthetic clinic, the demand for botox and fillers grows by 10% in the first half of June compared to the following month. Dentist Heliana Santiago, who also runs the clinic, attributes this increase to people preparing for the São João festivities.

In addition to the economic boost, São João also impacts the tourism industry in Bahia. Valdenita Bispo’s company, Geo Produções e Turismo, organizes excursions to islands and other cities, attracting tourists to the region. The islands of Baía de Todos-os-Santos are among the most popular destinations.

Last year, the fireworks trade suffered due to uncertainties caused by the pandemic. However, this year, the Salvador Association of Fireworks Merchants (Aconfarte) predicts a 30% increase in sales compared to 2022. To meet the demand, 10 tents will be set up on Avenida Paralela, three more than in the last São João.

Guilherme Dietze, a consultant from Fecomércio-BA, believes that this São João will mark the resumption of sectors linked to the party after the hardest period of the pandemic. He states, “It is a moment of consolidation of the Bahian economy in the service sector and the beginning of a new level due to better economic conditions.”
