Santos to Earn Over R$125 Million in Transfer Sales, Easing Financial Troubles

O Santos will earn more than R$125 million in the current transfer window with the sale of three athletes: Jean Lucas, Dodi e Marcos Leonardo. The amount will help Peixe to have a breather to pay more urgent expenses, such as payroll, and think about the medium term.

The great challenge of Marcelo Teixeira’s management is to contain the financial imbalance caused by the fall to Series B of the Brazilian Championship. There was a sudden decrease in revenue and, with part of the budget for the Campeonato Paulista already anticipated by the previous administration, the scenario became even more complicated.

R$30 million was paid in advance by former president Andres Rueda with the São Paulo Football Federation. Peixe will also not compete in the Copa do Brasil, having even less money to receive.

With this, Marcelo’s challenge becomes enormous not only in relation to the future, but also in relation to the present, since it has not been easy to even pay the salaries of all employees. Therefore, this is the most urgent task: honoring commitments every month.

The salary bill for the professional men’s squad exceeded R$11 million, but the president has already made negotiations, arranged for athletes to leave and wants to halve the amount by the start of the season. The money can also help the club to position itself even better in the market. So far, 12 signings have been confirmed.

At the same time, Marcelo intends to make changes to the club throughout 2024 and, in order to dismiss employees, he will need to pay for terminations. With pending issues, such as the guarantee fund, 13th salary and vacations, the amounts are not considered low and the task will be arduous.

Sales made by Santos:

  • Marcos Leonardo to Benfica for 18 million euros (R$96.3 million);
  • Jean Lucas to Bahia for 4.5 million euros (R$ 24.2 million);
  • Dodi to Grêmio for 1 million dollars (R$ 4.92 million).

Total sales: R$125.4 million*.

This amount of more than R$ 125 million, it is worth highlighting, does not go entirely to the government’s coffers. Santos. In the case of Marcos Leonardo, for example, the club only held 70% of his economic rights, and the club has not yet informed what the payment flow will be like nor the total amount allocated to Peixe in the transaction.

In relation to Jean Lucas, there is also the possibility of paying an additional 1.5 million euros (R$ 6.4 million) for achieving goals. Dodi was sold in a “package” with Soteldo going to Grêmio on loan.

In addition to what has already been mentioned, the total debt of the Santos This is another point to be considered by Marcelo Teixeira throughout his management: the value is close to R$600 million. Therefore, there is an urgent need to reduce costs, reduce payroll and focus on austerity management.
