Santos President Declares Pelé’s Number 10 Jersey Will Not Be Worn in Second Division

The new president of Santos announced on Saturday that Pelé’s number 10 jersey will not be used in the second division of the Brazilian football championship, after the club was relegated for the first time in its history.

Lawyer and business administrator Marcelo Teixeira, just an hour after being elected as the new president of Santos, announced the decision, in an electoral event marked by incidents and protests over the club’s situation.

“In the São Paulo championship we will be able to play normally with the number 10 shirt, but in the Brazilian championship, until we return to the first division, a level worthy of Pelé, we will not play with the number 10 shirt”, said Teixeira, who returns to the leadership of the club he presided over for six terms, between 1992 and 1993 and between 2000 and 2009.

For the leader, elected to help Santos get out of the biggest crisis in history, the second division does not live up to the number (10) immortalized by Pelé.

“In his memory and in his honor, as we dedicate this year to paying tribute to Pelé after his death (on December 29), we will continue with this mission. Until we return (to the first division), Santos Futebol Clube will not wear the most glorious jersey in its history, the 10th”, he added.

On Saturday, the 300th Cruyff Court in the world was also inaugurated, precisely in Santos, in a ceremony paying tribute to two football legends. The result of a collaboration between the Cruyff Foundation, the UEFA Foundation for Children and the Pelé Foundation, the new space will serve children and young people from local neighborhoods.
