Santos FC to Face Unprecedented Challenges in 2024 Season as Relegation to Brazilian Series B Looms

The 2024 season will be completely different from any other season ever experienced by the Santos. After all, for the first time in its century-old history, Peixe will play in Series B of the Brazilian Championship. The unprecedented relegation, added to the non-qualification for the Copa do Brasil, results in an also atypical year in terms of travel.

Over the next 12 months, the Santos will only play 13 games outside the state of São Paulo. The atypical situation occurs for two reasons. The first is the absence in competitions in Cup formats, and the second is the swelling of São Paulo clubs in the national Second Division: seven, in total.

In the 2024 Series B, in addition to the Santosthe state will be represented by Ituano, Grêmio Novorizontino, Mirassol, Ponte Preta, Guarani and Botafogo-SP.

By way of comparison, Peixe made 20 interstate trips last year. In 2021, the first year of Andres Rueda’s management at the Vila Belmiro club, there were 25 trips outside of São Paulo considering the Copa Sudamericana, Brasileirão and Copa do Brasil.

In practice, the reduced number of trips means more rest and training time for Fábio Carille’s men. In fact, the tight schedule will be something that the Santos will not be able to complain this season, since, at most, the team will play 54 matches a year.

In the second half of the year, with the Series B competition underway, Peixe will make five major trips: Recife, Fortaleza, Maceió, in the Northeast region, and Manaus and Belém, in the North region. Furthermore, the other trips are considered short and will not bring much wear and tear to the group of players.
