Fernando Santos Alviteformer Minister of Energy, will face impeachment in the Plenary of the National Assembly since 09:00 on April 25 for an apparent failure to perform duties that caused electrical blackouts in the country in 2023.
An assembly member will act as an interpellant and argue why political censure should be given to Santos Alvite. Other legislators can also speak. The now former official will have approximately two hours to defend himself and a reply.
92 votes are required for censure.
The previous April 15, the Oversight Commission unanimously approved a report recommending his impeachment due to mishandling of the energy crisis that led to energy rationing.
According to that report, the 2023 dry season could be foreseen, since there were warnings from climatological and risk organizations, but the pertinent measures were not taken.
This “demonstrates that there was improvisation, lack of concrete actions, as well as non-compliance with the Electrification Master Plan, and the lack of scheduled maintenance and repowering of some hydroelectric and thermoelectric plants to address the lack of generation during the drought.”
According to Ecuavisaafter the political trial of Santos Alvite follows that of the former Minister of the Interior, Juan Zapata; and then the prosecutor’s Diana Salazar.
