Santiago, the only Galician city that has gained population since the start of the pandemic

Santiago de Compostela is the only one of the seven Galician cities that has not lost population since the start of the pandemic: In January 2020 it had 98,593 inhabitants, 523 less than the 99,116 in July 2021, the latest data offered by the Galician Institute of Statistics (IGE).

This trend is also transferred to the region of Santiago, formed by Ames, Boqueixón, Brión, Santiago, Teo, Val do Dubra and Vedra, which went from 170,431 inhabitants to 170,985, a similar rise to the capital.

The increase, in addition to Santiago, is focused on Brión and Teo, which added 220 and 194 inhabitants to stand at 8,304 and 18,902, respectively. The greatest decrease occurred in Ames, which went from 31,813 to 31,579 inhabitants.

Population loss in the area of ​​influence

Parallel to the growth of the Santiago region and the capital itself, the counties in its area of ​​influence -Arzúa, O Barbanza, Noia, Ordes, O Sar and O Xallas- have lost population, with the only exception of las Terras de Melide, which ranges from 12,272 to 12,310 inhabitants.

In the same period of time -between January 2020 and July 2021-, the other six large Galician cities have lost inhabitants: A Coruña lost 4,274, Vigo 2,655, Ourense 2,337, Lugo 1,925, Pontevedra 818 and Ferrol, 1,531.
