He Santiago Subway, one of the main passenger transport networks in the capital of Chile, has announced this Wednesday the layout of Line 9, a new route that will link the city center with the municipalities of La Pintana and Puente Alto, in the sector south. Travel times for the nearly two million people benefited are expected to drop by about eight minutes.
Currently, the metropolitan underground train has an extension of 140 kilometers, being the second longest in Latin America behind the Mexico City Metro, whose sections reach 200 kilometers. The Line 9 project will add 27 more kilometers, which will allow the Chilean system to approach the record of its Mexican counterpart.
President Gabriel Boric presented during this day the route that the line will have, which will begin in the central sector of Mapocho and will end in Bajos de Mena, a community in the extreme south of the capital made up mainly of social housing, which for decades has suffered from transportation and isolation problems. The tour will also pass through La Legua, a town [barriada] historical.
The authorities estimate that the service will be partially operational in 2030, reaching the final inauguration of all the stations planned for 2033.

Line 9 will have 19 stations and will pass through the municipalities of Recoleta, Santiago, San Miguel, San Joaquín, La Granja, San Ramón, La Pintana and Puente Alto. From the north, the tour will begin at Cal y Canto, a station located on the banks of the Mapocho River –which crosses the city– where passengers can combine [trasbordos] to Line 2, Line 3 and the future Line 7. The end of the section will be Plaza Puente Alto, the current terminal station for Line 4.
The main street that will guide the Metro route will be Santa Rosa Avenue, one of the longest in the Metropolitan Region. For now there are no specific details about the names and locations of all the stations, although those that will combine with existing terminals are known: Santa Lucía [Línea 1]Matta [Línea 3]Biobío [Línea 3] and Santa Rosa [Línea 4A].

The cars that will be used in the new section will have a greater passenger capacity and will not have drivers, complying with a technological standard similar to that of the current lines 3 and 6. In the stations, spacious living spaces are considered, with services such as machines recharging, ATMs, commercial premises, among others. The design will consider accessibility for people with reduced mobility at all levels.
Stages for the inauguration
The construction project for Line 9 of the Santiago Metro is in full study stage, where those in charge are reviewing soil mechanics and aerial photogrammetry. In parallel, the analyzes for the presentation of the Environmental Impact Study (EIA) began, a necessary procedure for the implementation of any road, residential or commercial project. Once this phase is completed, the works will begin.
The inauguration of the service will take place in three stages: the first section will be launched in 2030 with 10 stations between Biobío and the one that will be located in the Plaza de La Pintana sector; the second section will open in 2032 with four stations between Biobío and Cal y Canto. The third and last section will consider five stations between Plaza de La Pintana and Plaza Puente Alto, which will be ready in 2033.
