New York: At the end of his New York tour, Santiago Peña was photographed with Joe Biden on Thursday evening. The president posed with the US President, his wife Jill Biden and First Lady Leticia Ocampos during the reception given by the Democrat. The picture was taken in the middle of the presidential election campaign in the United States and four months before Biden’s departure from the White House.
There was speculation in the government and the State Department about the meeting, which, similar to last year, also took place in New York and at this time of year – the two presidents were attending the UN General Assembly – when Peña was settling in at the López Palace. But most of all they were waiting for the photo.
The personal conversation is a gesture after Peña asked the United States to expedite the departure of its ambassador to Asunción, Marc Ostfield, who was responsible in Paraguay for announcing sanctions against Horacio Cartes and his critical stance towards the leadership of the Colorado Party was celebrated. Peña made it clear that bilateral relations are one thing and the Ostfield figure is another, just as the Colorado party leader’s legal affairs in the United States should not be mixed with security policy cooperation or strategic coincidences. So, in his speech to the UN, the President mentioned the crisis in Venezuela, and today Foreign Minister Rubén Ramírez Lezcano attended a meeting called by Antony Blinken.
Peña caused unrest at his first appearance in New York. He signed the Compact for the Future, a global roadmap that aligns with Democratic Party interests and terrifies Honor Colorado’s “anti-globalizers” as the Senate Anti-Money Laundering Commission investigates USAID funds and Quite a few co-religionists speak of foreign interference and accuse the ambassador of instigating political persecution of Cartes.
The president called for a re-establishment of the multilateral system, but did not reject it. This week he met with Kurt Campbell, the deputy secretary of state, and discussed security, Washington’s priority in Paraguay and the region, and later with Susan Segal, the head of the Council of the Americas. He also had a photo op with Bill Clinton, and had a moment with Biden before leaving for Mexico.
