(ANSA) – PALERMO, MAY 12 – “We are closing culturally to a reform that would not bring any benefit to justice and which would endanger the independence of the judiciary and therefore the minister who tells us that the independence of the judiciary is not in question public prosecutor and that tomorrow’s prosecutor, designed by him, will have the same independence as today’s one, let’s say but if that’s the case, why should we touch him? Giuseppe Santalucia, president of the ANM, said this this morning to journalists on the sidelines of the 36th congress of the national magistrates association, underway in Palermo. “On the constitutional reform – continued Santalucia – the ANM is critical and it is not possible to shorten the distances through dialogue. We said it frankly, this obviously does not mean not recognizing the absolute and exclusive decision-making power of the Chambers. But we as an association of magistrates – underlined the president of the ANM – we do not feel any need to touch the constitutional charter, when it has outlined the relationship of the judiciary with the other powers and the essential structure of the judiciary”. Then Santalucia clarified ANM’s position on the reforms: “Ours is not a closed position, but there are reforms and bad reforms. We have many years of a republic behind us which was governed by this constitution. This constitutional structure has given the opportunity for the judiciary to be a protagonist in the growth of the quality of our democracy, thanks to this constitutional charter which still has a lot to say”, he concluded.
