The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council, through the Department of Equality and at the initiative of the Municipal Council for Women, has proposed on the occasion of the celebration of International Women’s Day to recognize four women who have stood out in the world for their professional performance of journalism, contributing to equality between women and men, by being inspiring and reference points for other women.
The journalists honored will be María Luisa Arozarena Marrero, Mayte Castro García, Raquel Acirón Albertos and Carmen María Rodríguez Wangüemert in an institutional event that will be held on March 23 in the Plenary Hall of the Municipal Palace.
The councilor for the area, Purificación Dávila, wanted to highlight the work of women in journalism since “the proposal of these four journalists perfectly encompasses the rest of the women who work in the media and who have carried out a very important work in favor of of the woman”.
Since 2015, the Consistory has proposed to honor women who, due to their professional or personal career, have excelled in different areas of social, economic, cultural, science, literary life and their fight for equality between women and men.
For the celebration of this year, the City Council has organized several actions, including on March 2 and 8 with two institutional acts of recognition of Honors and Distinctions through the discovery of the plaques that give their name to the streets Montserrat Conde Concepción and Julia Gil López.
Finally, colloquium talks will be held in person towards the middle or end of March, which will last approximately an hour and a half, in the afternoon / evening hours.
