With a Christmas campaign, the Baden Transport Industry Association drew attention to the situation of truck drivers. Accompanied by Santa Claus, he distributed more than 300 bags with donated hats, gloves and fruit to truck drivers who had to spend the holidays at motorway service stations in the region around Freiburg on Christmas Day.
“Some wait here for jobs after the holidays instead of being with their families,” said managing director Tobias Lang. This applies above all to drivers from countries such as Ukraine and Lithuania. “Of course, they don’t go to the plant three times a day for three days, they sizzle something on the stove,” he made clear. The situation is “a bit terrifying”. He would prefer not to find anyone at the rest stops to give the bags to.
The Santa Claus campaign has been going on for several years. According to Lang, the costume is put on by a man who is a truck driver himself. “This makes access easier,” said the association manager. Without a disguise, at first glance it would seem like a control action by the authorities.
