Santa Clara responded to Rabo de Peixe’s statement regarding the attacks that occurred in the junior game between the two teams, in which two players from the home team were sent off for attacking an athlete from the Reds from Ponta Delgada. Santa Clara’s management says it reacted with “astonishment” when it saw that Rabo de Peixe intended to “transform a preventive measure into a provocative act”, referring to the fact that it appeared at its opponent’s home accompanied by private security guards. The 2nd League club accuses the opponent of not mentioning other attempts at aggression. “At the end of the game, an athlete from the CDRP junior team – also a former Santa Clara athlete –, accompanied by his father and two other members, chased, threatened and tried to attack our coach Luís Gamboa, who was accompanied by their underage daughter. Fortunately, the latter were in time to escape to the Santa Clara team bus”, the statement read.
“Despite some attacks and injuries to which they were the target, the aforementioned private security elements always had a passive attitude, in order to try to calm tempers and, of course, guarantee the safety of the entire Santa Clara entourage”, continues the club which repudiates the fact that Rabo de Peixe did not “demonstrate any interest or concern for the health status of the athlete who required hospital treatment.”
