More than three quarters of the people who donate blood to blood bank Sanquin have antibodies against corona. The organization has that announced on Thursday. The blood bank publishes weekly figures on the number of donors with antibodies; last week it was 77 percent. Sanquin says it has noticed a rapid increase in the number of donors with antibodies since the Dutch vaccination campaign got off the ground.
The fact that the vaccinations were administered per age category is clearly reflected in the donated blood. Sanquin uses tests that can distinguish between antibodies by infection and by vaccination. In the age group 41 to 50 years, almost sixty percent have antibodies as a result of a vaccination, 21 percent because of an infection. In the category 18 to 30 years, 20 percent have antibodies due to a vaccination, 26 percent due to infection.
Sanquin expects to signal an increase in people in their twenties with antibodies “soon” because that group is now also up for a shot.
