In an interview with the Parisian, Dr. Jean Lang, head of the public health unit of the French pharmaceutical laboratory Sanofi Pasteur, revealed the time frame within which a vaccine against the coronavirus, which is causing the current pandemic, would be available.
“It is clear that we will not have a vaccine for the first wave, in progress, of SARS-CoV-2. For this year, it is the only available treatment track, such as hydroxychloroquine or antivirals. We can hope for a vaccine within two years, “he said.
Tests and official authorization
He said the vaccine should be tested in phase 1 clinical trials to verify safety. These will be spread over a period of six to twelve months on 30 to 50 volunteers.
Phase 2 will be larger and the trials will be conducted on a larger number of candidates.
In addition, it will take time to obtain authorizations from health authorities.
Dr. Jean Lang said the vaccine will be very useful because everything suggests that this virus will have a seasonality and that it will have to be protected for years to come.
