Former Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin officially resigned on Friday as party leader of the social democratic party SDP. In her farewell speech, she again expressed her support for Ukraine. When she took office, Marin was the youngest prime minister in the world.
After the election defeat of the SDP in early April, the former prime minister already announced that she would step down as leader of the party. On Friday, she put her money where her mouth is.
At 34 years old, Marin was the youngest prime minister in the world when she took office in 2019. The Finnish is very popular on social media and appeared on the covers of the magazines Vogue in Time.
After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Marin became an outspoken ally of Ukraine. Under her leadership, Finland became a member of NATO after years of neutrality.
“Russia must be held accountable for the illegal crime of aggression, war crimes and the consequences of war,” she said in her farewell speech.
“In addition to Finland’s steadfast support for Ukraine and the Ukrainians, we must also send a strong message of hope for the reconstruction of the country, for a European future.”
Marin went all over the world after a leaked video in which she danced
Marin hopes that her personal life will be less in the spotlight now that she has stepped down. During her premiership, she came under fire for hosting parties in her official residence.
A video in which she can be seen dancing and partying leaked and became news outside Finland. While some called the partying Marin “human,” critics spoke of inappropriate behavior. They also wanted Marin to take a drug test because they thought she had used narcotics. None of that turned out to be true.
