Sanjay Manjrekar Advises Shreyas Iyer on Playing Defensive Style in Test Cricket and India’s Wicket-keeping Options for Third Test

Former India all-rounder Sanjay Manjrekar has advised under-fire middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer to play a defensive style if he wants to excel in Test cricket. Iyer, who started well in Test cricket but is now struggling to hit form, has been left out of the squad for the last three Tests against England. In his last seven Tests, Iyer managed just 187 runs from 12 innings at an average of 17.00. The best score is just 35. Speaking in a video to ESPNCricinfo, Manjrekar said that he first needs to decide which format Iyer will play in. Will try to excel.

“It is up to Iyer to decide which formats to experiment with and excel at. If Tests remain his priority, Iyer should play a defensive style. He has understood that if he plays in an attacking style, he will get the job done. If he wants to come back, he has to play well in defensive style,” said Manjrekar.

On his predictions for the third Test line-up, Manjrekar said that KL Rahul would return as a specialist batsman and admitted that he did not know how the team management thought about the wicket-keeper position. KS Bharat scored just 221 runs at an average of 20.09 from seven games without any fifty in 12 innings. His best score is 44.

Manjrekar said he would like to see India field other wicket-keeping options.

“Rahul should definitely be in the field. Don’t know what the team management and selectors think about the keeper. Before Rishabh Pant comes in and takes his rightful place in the Test team, a few others have to be tested. India has options,” added Manjrekar.
