Sanitas and Nationale-Nederlanden in Spain Forge Alliance to Offer Health Insurance

The CEOs of Sanitas, Iñaki Peralta and Nationale-Nederland in Spain, Carlos González Perandones.

The battle for health insurance is heating up in Spain. Sanitas, the second largest company in the sector, has signed an agreement to distribute this type of policies through Nationale-Nederlanden. It is an insurer belonging to the Dutch NN Group, which already has 850,000 clients in Spain. This entity was part of the ING banking group but after the 2008 crisis the two businesses were separated.

NN sells in Spain through an extensive network of 2,000 commercial agents, who provide 60% of policy subscriptions. Another 20% still comes from the sale of insurance thanks to the ING subsidiary in Spain, with whom they have a distribution agreement.

The orange insurer offers protection, savings and investment solutions in the short, medium and long term and will now develop a line of long-term health products. The alliance of Nationale-Nederlanden and Sanitas “aims to respond to the needs of citizens taking into account the current situation and needs of specific social segments,” they explain in a note. They will begin offering products in 2024.

Sanitas distributes its health insurance, in addition to direct marketing, with agreements with BBVA, Sanitas… and also with the insurer Generali. The entity, which belongs to the British group Bupa, has more than 60 years of experience in the Spanish market. The insurer, in addition to offering health policies, has a wide healthcare network made up of its four own hospitals (in addition to one under construction in the Madrid neighborhood of Valdebebas) and 24 multispecialty medical centers. Sanitas also offers its clients a concerted network of more than 50,000 professionals and more than 4,000 medical centers and hospitals spread throughout the country.

In the words of Carlos González Perandones, director of Nationale-Nederland in Spain, “we are very proud to be able to consolidate alliances and synergies that facilitate and contribute to achieving our goal of being able to offer the best customer experience. For his part, Iñaki Peralta, CEO of Sanitas and Bupa Europe & LatinAmerica, points out that “this agreement is another example of how alliances are an excellent lever to offer customers the highest quality products and services.”
