Regarding this, Shin Tae-yong gave an interesting explanation. The South Korean coach deliberately put Sandy Walsh in that position against Brunei Darussalam.
“Sandy Walsh is in the team’s position as a right full back,” said Shin Tae-yong.
“I really tried to make him a midfielder, because as an anticipation when we meet an opponent who is stronger than the Indonesian National Team, that’s what I thought,” explained Shin Tae-yong.

According to Shin Tae-yong, Sandy Walsh is actually quite familiar with the defensive midfielder position. However, Sandy played this role 10 years ago.
Shin then talked about Sandy Walsh’s performance as a defensive midfielder during the Indonesian National Team versus Brunei Darussalam. He feels that the KV Mechelen player still needs to improve a lot.

The Indonesian national team won a big 6-0 victory over Brunei Darussalam in the first leg of the first round of the 2026 World Cup Qualifications in the Asian zone, Thursday (12/10/2023).
The results achieved at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, Jakarta meant that the Garuda Squad was already in the second round of the event.
The Indonesian national team will still advance to the second round of the 2026 World Cup Qualifications, if they lose by no more than 0-5 in the second leg.
The second leg match will be held at the Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium, Bandar Seri Begawan on Tuesday (12/10/2023). Shin Tae-yong could make interesting changes to that match.
