As we already reported on Thursday, Sándor Csikos, a member of the company of the Csokonai National Theater in Debrecen, winner of the Kossuth and Jászai Mari awards, was chosen as the actor of the nation.
According to the announcement of the National Theatre, Sándor Csikos was elected on Thursday to replace Miklós Benedek, who died on January 9. In connection with the award, Debrecen Television approached the artist born in Karcag.
– Attila Vidnyánszky called me after the meeting and the colleagues also greeted me. It was very unexpected, I thought that it couldn’t be higher than the Kossuth award, but I am very happy that I received this title – said Sándor Csikos in relation to how he learned about the good news.
The actor emphasized that one does not work to receive an award, but to do one’s work, but if one is recognized, it is good. He added that, as a rural actor, it is especially good that this award brings some attention to them as well.
Sándor Csikos mentioned some of the roles closest to his heart.
– I really liked Magda Szabó’s roles, it was a special gift to be able to meet the writer.
I was able to act in the plays of maybe four or five authors who were sitting in the auditorium, which is also a wonderful thing. It is also memorable that I was able to shape King István and Lucifer as well, he said.
The nation’s new actor gave a simple answer to the question of how he is still fanatically fond of theater.
– I have considered this field as a profession since the beginning, as well as teaching. I have served the Hungarian language, literature and culture and continue to serve it to this day
he said.
For outstanding activities in the field of Hungarian theater, the development and popularization of national theater, the interpretation of national literature and the cultivation of the Hungarian language, the title of national actor can be awarded to the artist chosen by the holders of the title. A maximum of twelve people can hold the title at the same time, and if one of them dies, the other holders of the title decide who can take the vacant place.
The nation’s actors gathered on Thursday in the director’s office of the National Theater and decided to offer Miklós Benedek’s place to Sándor Csikos.
The Kazinczy Prize-winning actor was also awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary and was born in Karcago on October 28, 1941. After the Academy of Theater and Film Arts, he was a member of the National Theater in Miskolc from 1965-1969, the Literary Theater from 1962-1972, the Csokonai Theater in Debrecen from 1972, the Kisfaludy Theater in Győr from 1974-1975, and then from 1975-1984 he is again a member of the company of the Csokonai Theatre. After that, he signed a contract with the Móricz Zsigmond Theater in Nyíregyháza, where he was the director between 1990-1993. Since 1993, he has been a member of the Csokonai Theater company again.
During his more than five-decade career, he played more than two hundred roles, and is one of the Hungarian actors who appeared on stage the most times as Lucifer in the tragedy of man.
The title of actor of the nation – due to the death of Géza Tordy at the end of March – is still held by eleven after Thursday’s election: in addition to Sándor Csikos, Levente Király, Gyula Bodrogi, Piroska Molnár, György Cserhalmi, László Szacsvay, Éva Almási, Tamás Jordán, Zsuzsa Lehoczky, Dorottya Udvaros and Judit Pogány.
