Motorsport fan, trumpeter, airplane, racing driver and of course former CEO of the Jumbo supermarket chain: this is how journalists Sander van Mersbergen and Jurriaan Nolles describe the eccentric entrepreneur Frits van Eerd. After the raid on Van Eerd’s house in 2022, where tons of money were found, the two journalists investigated the question: who is this entrepreneur who leads a double life? They wrote the book ‘Fritske’ about it.
“Frits is just a lot.” This is how Sander van Mersbergen would describe the former CEO of Jumbo. According to the investigative journalist, he is a man with a lot of energy and even more passion. But he was also someone who led a double life, as the two said Sunday afternoon in the KRAAK talk show.
Money laundering research
Van Eerd turned out to be involved in a major money laundering investigation in 2022. A ton of money was found in his home during a raid. But there has been talk of the entrepreneur for some time. For example, Nolles points to 2014: “In that year he was also suspected of laundering money.
Van Eerd was at the helm of one of the largest supermarket chains in the Netherlands. He also had a passion for motor sports, which could explain the large amount of money at home, according to Nolles. “He likes motocross, dealing in cars, a bit of chaos. There’s a lot of money involved. That’s one of the theories why he had so much money at home.”
‘He gave Jumbo wings’
In the book Fritz not only do the two journalists try to get an answer to Van Eerd’s role in the money laundering investigation, but they also explain who the entrepreneur really is. “He has done a lot of good. Because of that, Jumbo has gained a lot of wings, and it was thought for a long time that he would not be a follower of Carel van Eerd,” says Nolles.
For their book, Nolles and Van Mersbergen contacted over a hundred people from Van Eerd’s life. Many of them also responded. In addition, the two were given access to Van Eerd’s police interrogation during the money laundering investigation. “I can’t tell you how we got that. But when we saw that, we were really thinking ‘holy f*ck’. It gave us a clearer picture of how it worked.
The trial against Frits van Eerd is still ongoing and will continue early next year. Will the former CEO be convicted? “That’s up to the judge,” Nolles concluded.
