Sanctions make buying vaccines difficult

In theory, Tehran can buy vaccines against Covid-19 abroad. However, international banks fear US penalties. The Iranian government is therefore complaining that Washington is preventing them from buying vaccines.

Iran is one of the countries hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic. While the government initially downplayed the danger and only took half-hearted measures to contain it, it is long gone. The revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei sets a good example and always wears a face mask at public appearances, while politicians are careful to observe distance rules at meetings. In addition, the government repeatedly imposed travel restrictions and closed schools, universities and entertainment venues.
