Sanctions and Suspense: The Fallout from Bordeaux-Rodez Controversy

The sanction finally fell, more than a week after this Bordeaux-Rodez which will never know a final whistle. Following the intrusion of a Bordeaux supporter on the edge of the field and his gesture towards Lucas Buades who had just opened the scoring for the Aveyronnais, the match had been definitively interrupted. The fate (downhill or uphill as the case may be) of the two clubs has since been suspended by the decision of the LFP Disciplinary Committee. The latter took her time to position herself in full knowledge of the facts and on documents, far from the hubbub of the moment and the little score that everyone was starting to whistle to charm her world. This slowness was commendable in principle, but it was the last day of Ligue 2 and the famous FIFA calendar, like the departure on vacation of many players, left few windows in the event of resuming these fateful 90 minutes. . So the dice were rigged in some way.

Short-term judgment

On Monday, the commission therefore condemned the Girondins to lose this match on green carpet, which definitively buries the hopes of going back to Ligue 1 (and allowing Metz to find its derby with Strasbourg). In addition, the club with the scapular will start next season with a penalty point in the standings, which is difficult to understand the meaning or even the interest (it is either useless or too little). Above all, as has often become the sad norm, the South Tribune, which notably hosts the Kop and the UltraMarines, will be closed for two home matches (two others on borrowed time, small sword of Damocles). This last decision remains the most incomprehensible. The individualization of sanctions, knowing that the supporter concerned will have to explain himself to the courts, is always presented as the best way to respond effectively to this type of overflow. Especially since in this case, the ultra group was very clear and responsible thereafter, at least in its official press release. This punishment is perhaps intended to set a precedent and send a message to the stands of France, collectively?

Indeed, faced with the difficulty of the case, the commission stuck to the transgressive act itself: a supporter desecrated the sacred ground to attack a player in the game. The Rodez club also underlined how painful the sequel was for him and his staff: « The surge of hateful messages and death threats received for more than a week against the club and its player, Lucas Buades, should no longer be allowed today. With this press release, we have a special thought for all the victims of harassment and more generally of violence. It is no longer tolerable. » There can be no doubt that this argument is also, rightly, weighed.

As expected: no winner

How to unravel this story? How to pronounce the right verdict which can condemn a club (Annecy) not directly involved to the descent, deprive a legend of French football (the Girondins) of a possible rise or can save a team (Rodez) which considers itself the only victim . There was no way that satisfied, or satisfied all parties, to do justice. It was impossible to avoid malcontents, even collateral victims. Rodez played his card thoroughly, and surely forced the line (to remain measured) to save himself at all costs, taking advantage of the windfall that was stupidly offered to him on a plate. And obviously, Bordeaux will feel aggrieved with regard to a “a decision as incomprehensible as it is disproportionate, both in terms of the elements of the file and the case law”. He has already announced his desire to « seize the CNOSF as soon as possible to defend its rights and sporting equity ». While waiting for the next Bordeaux-Rodez in Ligue 2 next season, we wish good luck to this last institution which for its part is itself going through a significant crisis at the moment…
