Sanctions Against Russia: The Impact on Exports and Trading Partners

Also, according to the institute’s estimates, due to the export restrictions of the EU and other western countries, about a third of the goods subject to sanctions are not supplied to Russia, compared to the pre-war period.

Institute researchers point out that China has become the alternative country of origin of goods subject to sanctions, supplying Russia with 61% of their total volume.

On the other hand, 13% of the goods subject to sanctions come to Russia from Turkey. Also, about 1% of these goods go to Russia from Armenia.

Institute researchers pointed out that in the case of China, the increase in exports to Russia is at least partially explained by the increase in domestic production, while in the case of Turkey and Armenia, a sudden and rapid increase in exports raises suspicions of circumventing or violating sanctions.

After Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine against it a series of sanctions have been introduced. While exports of goods subject to sanctions to Russia are roaring, volumes have grown rapidly to countries that continue to trade with Russia. This has raised concerns about the circumvention of sanctions, which the European Commission hopes to limit with new measures.
