In particular, Bloomberg quotes the words of high-ranking diplomats and officials who, on condition of anonymity, said that Germany, France, Italy and Spain are resisting attempts to quickly develop a sanctions mechanism against Russia in the event of an invasion of Ukraine. Even though the Kremlin has shown no signs of abandoning a troop buildup near Ukraine’s borders.
It is also reported that the aforementioned countries want to focus on negotiations with Moscow before announcing economic sanctions. At the same time, other EU member states argue that supporting public threats of sanctions will better deter Russian President Vladimir Putin.
