Sanctions against Russia create problems for Kazakhstan, Akylzhan Baimagambetov, deputy chairman of the Kazakh National Bank, said. According to him, the restrictions “to some extent have a negative impact on economic activity in certain areas.”
Baimagambetov explained that the Kazakh government is trying to remain neutral, but Moscow remains Astana’s largest trading partner. He assures that the authorities are trying to prevent the republic from being used to circumvent sanctions.
He noted that because of the sanctions, “the structure of Kazakhstan’s exports to Russia has changed somewhere,” and there is already a decrease in the export of ferrous metals. “If we look at our export volumes to Russia, we see that in nominal terms, on the contrary, there is no growth in annual terms in 2022 compared to 2021,” said Akylzhan Baimagambetov (quoted from Orda.kz).
According to the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, trade between Russia and Kazakhstan increased by $2 billion in 2022, to $26 billion. The US Treasury warned Kazakhstan about the risks of sanctions due to Russia’s assistance. Since April 1, a system for monitoring imported goods in the Russian Federation has been launched in Kazakhstan. It is expected that due to the tightening of the import of goods from Kazakhstan, the cost of household appliances will increase by 12%.
