Sanctions against Putin and Russia – another bill was submitted to the US Senate on January 14

Another bill has been submitted to the United States Senate, which provides for the imposition of sanctions against Russia and, in particular, Russian President Vladimir Putin. Measures may be introduced in the event of an invasion of Russian troops into Ukraine.

The “Deterrence of Authoritarian Warfare Act of 2022” provides for the immediate imposition of harsh personal sanctions against Putin and the rest of the Russian leadership.

“The bill will for the first time impose sanctions against Putin himself and those sectors of the Russian economy on which the personal enrichment of his regime depends. It is very important that this the bill will not depend on US President Joe Bidenwho will decide what is considered an invasion of Ukraine,” the message reads.

The document provides:

  • blocking property belonging to Vladimir Putin, the Russian Prime Minister, the Russian Defense Minister and other Russian oligarchs identified in the course of reporting and revoking their visas;
  • a ban on transactions with Russian companies in the energy, financial, mining and aerospace sectors of the Russian economy;
  • imposing a sanction against SWIFT if it does not stop providing services to Russian banks and companies subject to sanctions in accordance with the bill;
  • immediate imposition of new sanctions against Nord Stream 2.

The document also notes that if the bill is passed, the Director of National Intelligence of the United States will have to submit a report to Congress every 20 days on whether Russia or its proxies violated the territorial integrity of Ukraine at the present time.

At the same time, within 10 days after the presentation of the report, the president must impose sanctions against the Russian Federation.
